Table Comprehension Instructions

In this task, we will ask you to make inferences about the information presented in a tabular form.

We will show you a table and three statements. Using only the table and what you believe most people know about the world, you should choose one of the following options for each statement:

  1. Based on the information in the table and what is commonly known, the statement is definitely true.
  2. Based on the information in the table and what is commonly known, the statement is definitely false.
  3. The statement could be true, but could also be false. We need additional information that is neither commonly known, nor explicitly mentioned in the table comes to a conclusion.

[Important] Avoid using information that you may know if you believe that it is not generally known.

The table below and the following examples clarify the instructions. Please go over these examples carefully.

  • Example 1
Statement: NYSE has fewer than 3,000 stocks listed.

    1. ✔ Based on the information in the table and what is commonly known, the statement is definitely true.
    2. ✘ Based on the information in the table and what is commonly known, the statement is definitely false.
    3. ✘ The statement could be true, but could also be false. We need additional information that is neither commonly known, nor explicitly mentioned in the table come to a conclusion.
Reasons: The table says that the number of listings on the New York Stock Exchange is 2,400. Given the context, we know that NYSE is the short form of the New York Stock Exchange and 2,400 is less than 3,000. So the statement is definitely true.
  • Example 2
Statement: Over 2,500 stocks are listed in the NYSE.

    1. ✘ Based on the information in the table and what is commonly known, the statement is definitely true.
    2. ✔ Based on the information in the table and what is commonly known, the statement is definitely false.
    3. ✘ The statement could be true, but could also be false. We need additional information that is neither commonly known, nor explicitly mentioned in the table come to a conclusion.
Reasons: The table tells us that the number of listings on NYSE is 2,400, not 2,500. So the statement is definitely false.
  • Example 3
Statement: NYSE has an office outside of NYC.

    1. ✘ Based on the information in the table and what is commonly known, the statement is definitely true.
    2. ✘ Based on the information in the table and what is commonly known, the statement is definitely false.
    3. ✔ The statement could be true, but could also be false. We need additional information that is neither commonly known, nor explicitly mentioned in the table come to a conclusion.
Reasons: From the context, we know NYC is the short form of New York City. We know from the table that NYSE has an office in NYC. However, there is no explicit information on the location of the other offices of NYSE, so we cannot be sure about the statement. Without further information (that may not be commonly known), it is possible that the statement is true, but it is also possible that the statement is false.
